The Caucasian colors are pleasant blues and browns, yellows, greens and ivory. Compared to Turkish rugs there is very little red. They haven't the subtlety of the Persian dyes, but they fitted well into the blue and tan era of early twentieth century decoration.
Very little is known of the early rugs. These nomads wove only for their own use, and few rugs lasted to become very old.
All the Caucasian rugs are made of wool—warp, weft and pile. The weave is only moderately fine. Sometimes the pile is quite long and shaggy, acquiring a polish with wear.
The rugs are either small, or long runners. The Ghiordes knot is always used.
